It exists an functional gap between ERP systems (like (SAO, BaaN, JDEdwards, ect.) and the process automation laye. While the main function of ERP system is the supply chain (relationship between manufacturer, supplier and distributor), MES systems combine all components relevant for production. So MES systems are an interface between production and the ERP layer. Like an integrative connecting piece MES systems combine the order management of the ERP layer with the control systems for production.

MES systems also have a number of horizontal functions, such as capacity planning, in-process material management, tracking and tracing, quality management, performance analysis, ect.

On a closer look, the ERP system passes orders, material requirements, bill of materials and other master data from the supply chain to the MES system. The MES system orchestrates the production based on this data. It passes the data through registration and information terminals, on printed documents or through automated processes to different processing centres and machines. These data are supplemented by technological data and information from all in the production involved systems. The MES system transforms this data to predicative information, such as KPIs (Key Performance Indicators - key data to determine the plant efficiency and productivity). The MES system receives machine conditions, quantities, qualities, personnel and machine times, material consumptions and other actual values from the production level. This data is promptly provided to the ERP system to handle for example order and logistics operations.
